SHELDON, Ill. (AP) — A man was killed and an Indiana sheriff’s officer was wounded during an exchange of gunfire at the end of a chase in Illinois, authorities said.
The suspect was killed Sunday night, 100 miles (160.9 kilometers) south of Chicago. The Newton County, Indiana, corporal was in critical condition at a hospital, Illinois State Police said.
Iroquois County sheriff’s officers were pursuing a man who was believed to be armed and with a hostage, state police said.
Cpl. Brandon Schreiber joined the effort when the chase went into Indiana.
“The pursuit came back into Illinois and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. The suspect exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged,” state police said.
Andrew Roselius, 37, of Clifton, died at the scene. No hostage was in his vehicle.
